Formal Education
Completed his doctoral degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Philosophy (1984), having obtained a masters degree in East Asian Studies at the University of Michigan (1975) and a masters degree in Sanskrit and Indian Studies at the University of Toronto (1979).
Further Education
Studied Mandarin and Classical Chinese in Taipei, Taiwan (1973-1974) and Classical Sanskrit at Pune University's Centre for Advanced Study in Sanskrit (1977-1978). Senior Research Fellow at the American Institute of Indian Studies (1986-1987), and a Numata Fellow at Ryokoku University (2006) in Kyoto, Japan.
Teaching
Has taught philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1984), the University of Alberta (1984-1985) and the University of Toronto (1988-1991) and has been teaching Semantics and Indian Philosophy at McGill University since 1991.

Has lectured at universities in Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
