As the poet and doctor William Carlos Williams noted,
It is difficult
to
get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for
lack
of what is found there.
This section will involve experiential learning about the power of art to transform attitudes toward nature. In particular, we shall experience poetry that motivates a change in attitude, from treating natural entities as mere things, to respecting their intrinsic value as fellow beings. We will assess the extent to which particular passages of poetry previously published attain this goal, and also seek new experiences of nature, and/or vivid recollection of past experiences, and translate them into a bit of poetry ourselves.
